In 1915 the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee decided to boost recruitment into the armed forces by producing this poster.

The unknown graphic artist's brief was obviously to paint an idealised, or in some cases accurate account of what could be lost to the enemy of Europe. The landscape could be Devon.

The Devonshire Regiment on 2 March 1916 landed at Basra with the independent 41st Indian Brigade and thereafter remained in Mesopotamia for the rest of the war.

My subtle addition to this iconic poster hopefully adds a contemporary aspect to a 100 year old problem.

OIL!

Original poster printed by Jowett & Sowry, Leeds.
